May is National Remodeling Month

Professional remodelers throughout Portland this month have plenty to celebrate as the National Association of Home Builders declares National Remodeling Month in May. Despite a slowdown in the national home building market for new construction, remodelers throughout most of the country – and particularly those in Portland – continue to thrive.

“A lot of homeowners have discovered the value of updating and upgrading their homes,” said Professional Remodelers Organization Chair Mitch Stanley, owner of Stanley Home Renovation & Design. “Everyone who owns a home knows that it is their most prized and personal space, and remodelers help people make the most of their space. From home theater rooms to a new dream kitchen to a full home makeover, professional remodelers are finding plenty of interested clients in the Portland Metropolitan area.”

The National Home Builders Association estimates that Americans spent $216 billion in home remodeling in 2008. Remodeling accounts for 2 percent of the US economy and 40 percent of all residential construction.

Last year in the Portland Metro area, more than $226 million was spent on residential remodels. And that is not just a lot of retiled kitchen floors – the average amount spent on a residential remodel in 2008 was $77,934 up 7 percent from 2007.

The top remodeling projects in order of popularity are: Kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling, room additions, and whole house remodeling. The
